Connect with God

by Charles R. (Dicky) DeMott

Everyday we have opportunities to connect with God through His Holy Word.  David reminds us in Psalm 63:6, “When I remember You on my bed I meditate on Your Word in the night watches.  Because You have been my help, therefore, in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice.”  God’s word encourages us to spend time in His Word everyday.

It has been reported that only 45 percent of professing Christians read the Bible on a weekly basis and only 12 percent open the book daily.  The Bible is not an obsolete document written by the saints of old.  It is the only book where the author is present every time it is read.  If we want to have a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior, we must get to know Him through His written Word.  In this precious Book, God reveals Himself, His love, His promises, His support, His admonition, His ways, and His plans.

One of my favorite psalms in the Bible is about the priority of the Word of God.  “For 178 verses, Psalm 119 holds high the words and wisdom of God and convinces us to treasure it more than anything else in life.” (John Maxwell)

For 37 years, I have been a member of The Gideons International, a ministry dedicated to distributing copies of God’s Word in 187 countries, and printed in 84 languages.  In the front of almost all the Gideon New Testaments, is the following quotation that describes the importance of reading and studying God’s Word.

“THE BIBLE contains the mind of God, the state of man, the way of salvation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers.  Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its histories are true, and its decisions are immutable.  Read it to be holy.  It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you.

It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter.  Here Paradise is restored, Heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed.

CHRIST is its grand subject, our good the design, and the glory of God its end.  It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, and prayerfully.  It is a mind of wealth, a paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure.  It is given you in life, will be opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves the greatest responsibility, will reward the greatest labor, and will condemn all who trifle with its sacred content.”

If we are to know God and have a personal relationship with Him, we must connect with God through His Word.
