Connect with Family

by Rick Jordan

"Easy does it" is a phrase that is sometimes used to calm someone down in a stressful situation. "Easy does it" is sometimes said when extra care is required in handling something fragile. "Easy Does It" is the name of a best selling CD of easy listening music. (Ha!)

The idea of approaching family life in a more relaxed (Easy does it) manner is very appealing, but the truth is, in the family connection, easy doesn’t always do it. A healthy, happy, connected family takes a lot of work. Can I get an Amen?

What work can we do in our families that will bring the best return? Specific suggestions have already been made in articles in previous Connect journals. Read those again. They are very good. To use a broader brush stroke to answer the question, may I suggest preventive maintenance?

Preventive maintenance is a schedule of planned maintenance actions aimed at the prevention of breakdowns and failures. This definition, taken from the service manuals in the automotive industry, offers some pretty good advise for families. A wise counselor and friend once told me that time spent on preventive maintenance in the family could save a lot of trouble down the road.

What does preventive maintenance mean in your family situation? I don’t know. You fill in the blanks.

Seek God’s will, and whatever He says to you, do it (John 2:5).
